Developing communities by developing people
Mamelani believes in developing communities by developing people. Our community development initiatives are aimed at growing a nation of grassroot leaders and building networks of support in communities.
We strengthen the leadership capacity of grassroot leaders and support them in developing interventions that can have a positive impact on those around them.
The community building initiative creates opportunities for people who have come through our processes to remain connected to a network of support and the Mamelani community

Community Champions
Mam’ Nomntu runs an aftercare programme in her community.
We partner with community champions to strengthen their capacity as leaders within their families and communities. We provide mentoring, capacity building, skills training, and other learning opportunities to strengthen the ways in which they promote health, well-being, and resilience in their communities.

Community gatherings
We believe that supportive environments offer people protection from factors that can threaten their health and enable them to expand their capabilities. People who have come through Mamelani’s initiatives remain connected to the organization. We host quarterly gatherings with youth, women, and community change makers so they can connect with each other and feel supported in their efforts to shaping their communities.
voices of participants:
COVID19 Relief and Support
Mamelani, alongside the rest of the welfare sector, is responding to the overwhelming need of unemployment and food sustainability that is facing communities post lockdown and Covid-19.
People in our initiatives are sharing fears about poverty and hunger, and we have had an unprecedented request for assistance with food relief. With the support of individual funders and donors, we have been able to support youth, families, and community support groups with monthly food vouchers. Facilitators offer emotional support, debriefing and sharing key health information via WhatsApp chat groups, Google hangouts and Zoom. We are supporting participants with data to ensure they remain connected to their community and network of support.
