Mamelani Projects, a Cape Town based NGO that runs both Youth Development Programmes and Community Health Programmes, is launching a book at the Book Lounge on 15 May 2018 at 6pm.
The book includes 10 inspirational stories about resilience told by young people who participate in their Youth Development Programme ProSEED. The programme provides necessary support and opportunities to young people as they make the transition from Child and Youth Care Centres at 18.
In September 2016; 10 young people, their mentor and a storytelling coach set out to capture and publish the stories of resilience that live so strongly in young people who have been in state care. The primary intention for the storybook was to highlight the strengths that these young people carry, and through their stories, to inspire other young people who read them, to also see their own strengths. The stories also aim to give the general public a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by young people and highlight the kinds of support that can help young people make a healthier transition towards adulthood.
Most of the young people included in the book have faced insurmountable challenges, and so their stories are emotional and inspirational. The stories are about losing parents, escaping abusive homes, overcoming reading and writing challenges, surviving alcoholic parents and being in a new country without any family – they are stories showcasing just how resilient the human spirit can be.
The Launch and Pre-sale
On 15 May, at 6pm at the Book Lounge (71 Roeland Street, Cape Town) the capturing of these stories will come full circle when the book filled with the moving stories will be launched. Some of the young people, the mentor, the storytelling coach and the founding director of Mamelani Projects will be present at the launch to read excerpts from the book as well as share their reflection on the process.
20 copies of the book will be available at the Book lounge for R180 per book; the rest of the copies will be available for sale during the pre-sale beginning 20 April. All funds generated from selling the book will go to raising funds to be able to print copies of the books for those who cannot afford them. For each book purchased, another copy of the book will be donated to a school, a library, a Child and Youth Care Centre or youth programme.
